I bought this as a gift for my sister - she had requested it - she hasn't commented on how she likes it
Yeah, poor Maya. I had hoped that I would get through life without having to read anything from the queen of self-importance, Maya Angelou. I can summarize it as follows: self-indulgent tripe.I was amazed at how white people could do nothing right. Her grandmother had enough means to make loans and help others financially. Toilet paper might be most fitting.If you want to read a profound, thoughtful, life-changing memoir and analysis of racism, check out Catfish and Mandala. When the police rode to the house to warn the family to protect the uncle, all she has is criticism.
Oh the humanity.The only redemption I found in the book is when I threw it in the recycling bin. Unfortunately fate intervened and I was required to read this in a college history class. She had to go without for a few months. Yes, I guess it would have been better for him to sit by and do nothing. She complains about how poor and mistreated she was, but everything in the book indicates that her family was a lot better off than most white and black people at the time. At least it will end up as something useful.
Leave this one alone.

Great book.sometimes a little difficult to stay with her. But, WOW, what an awesome woman.
I don't know the reviews for this book yet. So, she is preparing to read it and I'm sure that after she does, I will need to but her the other books in this series.But, this is the autobiography of Maya Angelou, one should know that this is a must read. What I'm saying is this book is a required reading for my daughter. I saw the movie made from this book when I was young, and I told my daughter that the books that movies are made form are far more better and fill in blanks. The movie was very good, and I am glad it is a required reading for my daughter, for when she is done, I will read it and I know that we will purchase the follow-up books as well, for I would like to know what drove Maya to be Maya, what hills and valley's she came through. This is historic and a must read for Young Women, because Maya overcame many things.
